The Exceptional Neo-Renaissance Bookcase Forming Desk by Guillaume Grohé, crafted in France circa 1860, measures 300 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 330 cm high, standing as a monumental masterpiece of both architecture and sculpture. The lower part features a drop-front desk supported by two pillars with drawers, while the lateral sections open with moulded doors. The upper bookcase opens via four windows separated by carved semi-columns with Corinthian capitals, topped by a pediment adorned with chimera and a female head. Crafted from wood, the piece is intricately decorated with Renaissance-inspired carvings of foliate motifs, griffins, and phantasmagorical masks, offering a stunning display for books or treasures.
Guillaume Grohé (1808-1885), a celebrated cabinetmaker, supplied royalty like Napoleon III and Queen Victoria, earning the Legion of Honour. Sold in 1884 when Grohé’s factory ceased production, this piece, in good condition with minor wear, reflects his dominance in 19th-century luxury furniture, as noted at the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition.
